Larimar Stone Meaning and Healing Properties of Larimar Jewelry:
Larimar is a gemstone found exclusively in the Caribbean, on the island of Hispaniola. Though it looks like this watery patterned, natural gemstone could come from the ocean, it is actually found in a dormant, volcanic mountain range in the Baoruco Mountains of the Barahona region of the Dominican Republic.
Larimar is a blue variety of the mineral pectolite, which is the only common gem form of the mineral, and was discovered in the Dominican Republic in the 1970s, which remains the only place in the world it is found. A Peace Corps worker and a native Dominican found the specimens on the beach, where it had washed down from the mountains. They named the gemstone Larimar, combining the name Larissa (said to be the Dominican islander’s daughter), a young woman with brilliant blue eyes, and “mar”, the Spanish word for the sea.
A durable and natural gemstone, Larimar is not enhanced in any way. Some colored gemstones are heated or stabilized to effect color or durability. This gem is quite strong, though it is prone to splintering during the cutting process. When cut as a cabochon (as most stones are) the smooth, domed shape adds strength. It is a 4.5-5 on the Mohs hardness scale but is more durable than that rating suggests. Larimar occurs naturally in beautiful shades of blue, with the distinctive ripple pattern which is reminiscent of the ocean. These patterns are nature’s unique creation - making no two Larimar stones exactly alike!
Though there is no official grading or valuation scale for Larimar, deeper blue stones with striking variegated patterns command higher prices and have become more scarce in recent years. With more public awareness of this gem, the demand for quality gemstones has increased and due to a finite supply, they have become more difficult to acquire.
This is considered a high quality larimar stone due to its consistent color and vivid tone, with watery patterns.
Larimar healing properties include: aiding clarity in communication in association with the throat chakra, and this high vibration gem also is known to aid the wearer in releasing emotional baggage. Many visitors to the mines have said that the workers who source the Larimar in the Dominican Republic are some of the happiest people they have ever encountered, supporting the claim that this tranquil blue gem promotes serenity, peace, and positivity.
Larimar jewelry is found throughout the Caribbean and now has spread to other coastal vacation destinations. Though seen around the world, there is still only one source for this special blue gemstone! The colors and patterns of Caribbean blue Larimar are reminiscent of the striking tones of the islands' seas and skies. Keep your larimar jewelry close to the heart for tranquility, calm and clarity of verbal and emotional communication. Keep it at your fingertips to remind yourself of the positive energy that comes with being close to the ocean and keep it by your ears to hear the sound of the water and the call of the islands.
