Larimar Stone Meaning and Healing Properties of Larimar Jewelry

Larimar Stone Meaning and Healing Properties of Larimar Jewelry:

Larimar is a gemstone found exclusively in the Caribbean, on the island of Hispaniola. Though it looks like this watery patterned, natural gemstone could come from the ocean, it is actually found in a dormant, volcanic mountain range in the Baoruco Mountains of the Barahona region of the Dominican Republic.

Larimar is a blue variety of the mineral pectolite, which is the only common gem form of the mineral, and was discovered in the Dominican Republic in the 1970s, which remains the only place in the world it is found. A Peace Corps worker and a native Dominican found the specimens on the beach, where it had washed down from the mountains. They named the gemstone Larimar, combining the name Larissa (said to be the Dominican islander’s daughter), a young woman with brilliant blue eyes, and “mar”, the Spanish word for the sea.

Larimar Stone Meaning

A durable and natural gemstone, Larimar is not enhanced in any way. Some colored gemstones are heated or stabilized to effect color or durability. This gem is quite strong, though it is prone to splintering during the cutting process. When cut as a cabochon (as most stones are) the smooth, domed shape adds strength. It is a 4.5-5 on the Mohs hardness scale but is more durable than that rating suggests. Larimar occurs naturally in beautiful shades of blue, with the distinctive ripple pattern which is reminiscent of the ocean. These patterns are nature’s unique creation - making no two Larimar stones exactly alike!

Though there is no official grading or valuation scale for Larimar, deeper blue stones with striking variegated patterns command higher prices and have become more scarce in recent years. With more public awareness of this gem, the demand for quality gemstones has increased and due to a finite supply, they have become more difficult to acquire.

Larimar Necklace Silver

This is considered a high quality larimar stone due to its consistent color and vivid tone, with watery patterns.

Larimar healing properties include: aiding clarity in communication in association with the throat chakra, and this high vibration gem also is known to aid the wearer in releasing emotional baggage. Many visitors to the mines have said that the workers who source the Larimar in the Dominican Republic are some of the happiest people they have ever encountered, supporting the claim that this tranquil blue gem promotes serenity, peace, and positivity.

Larimar jewelry is found throughout the Caribbean and now has spread to other coastal vacation destinations. Though seen around the world, there is still only one source for this special blue gemstone! The colors and patterns of Caribbean blue Larimar are reminiscent of the striking tones of the islands' seas and skies. Keep your larimar jewelry close to the heart for tranquility, calm and clarity of verbal and emotional communication. Keep it at your fingertips to remind yourself of the positive energy that comes with being close to the ocean and keep it by your ears to hear the sound of the water and the call of the islands.

I’ve been a collector of cut, faceted, ready to set in jewelry gemstones for soon to be 20 years. I’m just now finding out why I was drawn to this gemstone! I’ve got a beautiful piece that’s teardrop shaped in a ring, but I’ve yet to remove the tag and wear it! It’s so beautiful that upon receiving it by mail from a highly recommended jewelry company I tried it on and then after a few moments, removed it, and placed it in my jewelry box! I’m going to start wearing it now that I have read of its healing and other abilities! My big sister and I haven’t been close until, just a few years before my mother died! I forgave her of her treatment of me from childhood up after she finally asked my forgiveness in front of our mother of whom I had thought knew of my big sisters abuse all of my life but didn’t care! My mother was given 2 yrs to live and I had packed up my son, stopped everything, and came back to where I had been born only to be there for my mother, little brother, and other family members! Once our mother heard my sister ask forgiveness as she broke down crying and I told her I forgave her years ago, but I was thankful for her acknowledgement our mother was confused until my sister confessed to all of the abuse that drove me away at age 16, led to my becoming disabled at 17, and leaving the state of our birth at age 19 only to return when, I was needed by my mother, after finding my son’s father, then having our son and bringing him to visit when possible! I left TN at 19 and went to the beach in Florida where I met my son’s father! I still live near 8 different beaches since our mother passed and I moved back to the Outer Banks of NC. After just wearing the ring I spoke of I immediately bought my big sister an even bigger more impressive piece out of the blue! She’s always loved seahorses yet hasn’t lived out of TN but a few times and only once while she was on her own. She had moved to Florida shortly after I had my son. She had married a immature young man who got her pregnant while in Florida and they had lost everything because he couldn’t keep a job. She was living in a tent, working at a gas station, and pregnant while he hung out drinking, partying, doing whatever while she did everything to keep them alive! I made her go back to TN when she called me for help because I could only give her advise! My husband was military, she and I had never gotten along, and I couldn’t stand her worthless choice of a husband and wasn’t going to have them around my 4 month old son. I helped them get back to TN and after her daughter was 2 her husband abandoned her and their daughter. No matter where my husband was stationed, I was always back in TN if family needed me especially my mom. Needless to say, after wearing my ring for a moment, I placed it into my jewelry box and bought my sister a seahorses necklace! I will be calling her today to insist that for her health and wellbeing to wear her necklace more than on just special occasions and I’m removing the tag from my ring to start wearing it for the positivity, caring, heartfelt changes it had made happen that day! I never knew why I had looked for that specific item just after wearing my ring and spending that kind of money when I couldn’t really afford to especially when it wasn’t a special ocassion! Now, I know! I never buy a cheap gemstone! I have always looked for the best at the best price at reputable companies! Thanks for opening my eyes to what this gemstones properties are in all areas!

Sincerely,
Nora Barringer

Really interesting info about Larimar. I had no idea it’s origin was limited to such a small area. The settings you do with it are so artistic.

I love that people interpret my designs in ways that are meaningful to them. Sort of like a musician who covers another artist’s song, but brings their own life and style to it, adding something of their own. It’s a beautiful thing to add your own meaning to a work of art, adding a piece of your story, and making it personal and special. I also think it is a beautiful gift to see things in a new way, a fresh perspective when we see things through someone else’s eyes.

Creating Love and Memories
Creating Love and Memories

September 16, 2019

I have been given the opportunity to create engagement and wedding rings for many people in my years as a jeweler. Some of the most memorable being when friends or friend’s partners ask me to design a ring or rings for their engagement and wedding. It’s not only about making a piece of jewelry that they will treasure for years to come, but also about being brought into the circle of trust, being one of few people to know about this exciting surprise that is right around the corner.
