"The role of the artist is exactly the same as the role of the lover. If I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things you don’t see." ― James Baldwin
As we come off Valentine’s Day weekend, a holiday centered on love, this quote feels especially appropriate.
When we create, we are not simply making objects. We are revealing something. We are saying, here. Do you see this light? Do you see this color? Do you see this feeling? We are giving a new language to emotion. We are shaping invisible experiences into something tangible, something that can be held, worn, hung on a wall, passed from one hand to another.
Art makes us conscious of what we might otherwise miss.
The curve of a wave.
The strength in vulnerability.
The quiet resilience in the human spirit.
The beauty that exists even in uncertain times.
For the artist, creative expression is how we breathe. It is how we process the world. It is how we transform pain into meaning and beauty into connection.
In a world that can feel divided, rushed, and distracted, art slows us down long enough to feel. To gather. To remember our humanity.
That is what I witnessed at the opening of "Caribbean Impressions: The Essence of Beauty" in our gallery on Friday evening. Not just artwork on walls, but community. People choosing to show up. Choosing to engage. Choosing to be moved.
And that, to me, is an act of love.
As artists, as creatives, as people who believe in beauty, it is our mission to keep doing this work. To keep revealing what is unseen. To keep offering beauty as a bridge between hearts. Because when we create, and when we share, we are loving the world in the most tangible way we know how.
Happy Monday!
