“I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.” — Louisa May Alcott, Little Women
So many of us grew up believing we should feel ready before we face something new or hard. We want the answers first, a clear map, some reassurance, but life rarely works that way. The storms come whether we are prepared or not, and somewhere along the way we discover we know more than we thought, we can handle more than we thought, and we learn what we need as we go.
Here in the Caribbean, we’re nearing the end of another hurricane season. Living here teaches you that you can’t control the weather (or most other things). What you can do is pay attention, prepare as much as possible, and trust the experience you’ve built over time. Every season teaches us a little more.
I think that’s true in every chapter of life, maybe especially the later ones. A change at home, a house that suddenly feels a little quieter, a new routine, a dream we set aside years ago and are finally ready to pick back up. None of us has to be an expert on day one, we get to be learners again, and there’s real magic in that.
Creating has taught me this, too. Every piece teaches something new, and some of the most meaningful work comes from being willing to try before we feel completely sure. As artists and creatives, it is our mission to bring more beauty and inspiration into the world, and some of that inspiration comes from simply being brave enough to keep learning.
So this week, maybe we can give ourselves a little grace. You don’t need the whole map. Keep your hands on the wheel, stay curious, and trust that you’re learning to sail your own ship, one wave at a time.
Happy Monday!
